INTERVISTA A MALACHI MITCHELL-THOMAS: “FRA BSB E ROAD RACES NON SO SCEGLIERE”

INTERVISTA CON UNO DEGLI ASTRI NASCENTI DEL ROAD RACING CHE HA BEN FIGURATO AL MANX GP 2014

In un pomeriggio di fine luglio ho avuto il piacere di intervistare, ma chiacchierare sarebbe il termine più corretto, con Malachi Mitchell-Thomas, giovanissimo pilota che quest’anno è protagonista di un doppio esordio, nella classe Stock600 del BSB e nelle road racing, con podio alla Southern100, secondo posto nella Newcomer Race A e quarto posto nella Senior Race. A seguire la nostra lunga chiacchierata.

Ciao Malachi, iniziamo subito. È una stagione piena di gare per, fra il campionato stock600 nel BSB e le road races, quindi come stai?
Fino ad ora tutto bene e mi sto divertendo molto!Sono stato abbastanza impegnato fino ad oggi e con due round del BSB alle porte ed il Manx GP saranno altre settimane intense ma non vedo l’ora!

Prima di parlare del Manx, sono curiosa del tuo 2013, hai corso nel campionato Supermoto S2. Quanto questa esperienza di ha aiutato a crescere come pilota?

È stato grandioso guidare in un campionato così competitivo appena ho iniziato la stagione e gradualmente ho fatto progressi sul campo nel corso dell’anno. ti insegna in maniera eccellente come guidare ed era anche ottimo come allenamento,specialmente nelle sezioni di off-road.  

Grazie. Come mai hai fatto questo cambio dalla S2 alla 600?
Il team boss voleva cambiare sport e concentrarsi più sul lato road racing. Per me come newcomer nella 600 il BSB Stock600 è sembrato come un ottimo test sul campo!

Ad oggi stai facendo un ottimo debutto, a punti sia a Snetterton che a Brands Hatch. Ancora una volta cresci velocemente, immagino ti stia divertendo.
Si mi sto divertendo! Ho avuto molta sfortuna quest’anno durante le gare anche se è un anno di apprendistato tanto per il team quanto per me come pilota. Sono orgoglioso di questi due risultati e spero per altri come questo e raggiungere la top 10 entro la fine dell’anno.

Sei pronto per Thruxton e Oulton Park nelle prossime due settimane?
Si mi sento pronto. Thruxton è un tracciato nuovo per me ma dovrebbe essere molto veloce e la cosa mi piace! Oulton è il mio circuito di casa per questo non vedo l’ora di tornarci sperando in una dose di buona fortuna questa volta! (Malachi a Truxton ha concluso in settima posizione, partendo dalla sedicesima mentre ad Oulton Park in griglia era terzo ed ha concluso quarto nda)

Hai parlato anche dei piani road racing per questa stagione e infatti qualche settimana fa hai debuttato sul Billown Circuit (alla Southern100), come hai vissuto questa prima road race? Era la prima giusto, o mi sbaglio?
Si è stata la mia prima road race e l’ho amata! Sicuramente una nuova esperienza ma mi sono divertito molto. Ora non vedo l’ora che arrivi il Manx GP per correre sul Mountain Circuit un’altra volta!

Nella Manx Gas Solo Championship Race sei stato il primo pilota in sella ad una 600cc ed hai fatto anche podio! Niente male come prima volta
No è stata un’ottima esperienza e mi sono divertito molto!

Sta per arrivare la gara “maggiore”, poche settimane all’inizio del Manx GP, prima domanda in proposito. Com’è che un pilota giovane decide di corrervi?
Haha sinceramente non lo so, mi è stato chiesto dal team se volessi farlo e dopo averci pensato un po’ ho risposto di si. Credo che far la Southern100 prima del Manx GP mi ha aiutato perché ho potuto avere un’idea di cosa aspettarmi. 

Come ti sei allenato per il Mountain Course?
 Ho fatto qualche giro in auto e guardato moltissimi on board camera. Ho partecipato anche al Manx newcomer weekend (due weekend organizzati a Marzo dalla Hailwood Foundation, per permettere agli esordienti di approcciarsi al tracciato prima di agosto nda)che è stato un grande aiuto per me!

Oh molto bene! A che gare parteciperai?
sono iscritto alla Manx newcomer race A ed alla Senior race

Guiderai la 600cc, la stessa che hai usato alla Southern, giusto?
Si, che poi è quella che uso nel BSB.

Come devi modificare il tuo stile di guida passando alle road races, in confronto agli short circuit? (penso sia una gran cosa conoscere così bene la moto)
Si cambia molto e sto ancora imparando in entrambe le categorie per cui imparo continuamente e miglioro il mio stile.

Non sembra male, in questo modo puoi sempre imparare senza dover forzare il tuo stile.
Pensando invece alla Southern, qual è il tuo più bel ricordo?
Ehm vorrei dire che essere stato sul podio insieme a Conor Cummins è stato un momento che mi ha riempito di orgoglio.

Posso capire. Cosa ti augri per il Manx?
Spero nel podio o magari vincere la gara riservata ai newcomer e vedere qual è il mio massimo nel Senior! (per la cronaca Malachi era saldamente in quarta posizione quando il Senior è stato interrotto, l’ipotesi del podio non era azzardata nda)

Se qualcuno ti mettesse di fronte ad un bivio, scegliere BSB e road racing, pensi che potresti fare una scelta (e se si quale) oppure no?   
In questo momento mi diverto facendo entrambe. Ma se proprio dovessi scegliere rimarrei nel BSB ma i piloti che arrivano sono sempre più forti,  mentre ci sono più opportunità nella scena road racing, specialmente per un pilota giovane.       

Ultimamente molti piloti fanno entrambe le cose, le road races stanno ritornando ad essere popolari e penso sia grandioso anche per i piloti, anche in termini di sponsorship
Si molti sponsor sembrano interessati al lato road racing delle cose e io sono sempre alla ricerca di nuovi sponsor personali! 

Come hai detto sei giovane, la tua famiglia ha sostenuto il desiderio di correre fin dal primo giorno? Come vivono la tua carriera nelle road races?
Fin da quando avevo 6 anni sia mio padre che mio nonno mi hanno supportato per correre nel motocross. Hanno anche finanziato il mio primo anno di Supermoto, sulla CFR150 quando avevo 13 anni, tutto quando, fin quando non ho firmato per il mio primo team all’età di 14 anni. Ci sono persone che mi hanno sostenuto per essere dove sono ora.

Grande!! Siete molto vicini ed è una gran cosa!
Si anche se come tutti I padre e figli abbiamo le nostre discussioni haha!

Ahah esattamente come padre e figlio.
Esatto!

Ok, l’intervista sta per giungere al termine, cosa fai nel tempo libero? Come ti rilassi?
Nei  weekend in cui non corro mi piace andare a correre e allenarmi.. mi piace molto far motocross ma trovare il tempo è difficile. Mi piace rilassarmi semplicemente stando sdraiato sul divano a guardare la TV oppure passare il tempo con gli amici.    

Fatta eccezione per il Mountain Course, dicci una top tre di circuiti che ti piacciono (anche se non ci hai mai corso)
Mi è sempre piaciuto il tracciato di Philip Island in Australia! Anche Laguna Seca e mi piacerebbe correre a Macao!

Chi lo sa, magari ra qualche anno ti chiameranno per chiederti se vuoi partecipare.

INTERVIEW WITH MALACHI MITCHELL-THOMAS: “MY CAREER BETWEEN BSB AND ROAD RACES”

In a afternoon at the end of July it was my pleasure to interview, or it would be better to say to have a friendly chat, with Malachi Mitchell-Thomas, the young rider this year is doing his double debut, Stock600 in BSB race and road racing. He did a great podium at the Southern100, a second place in the Newcomer A race and 4^th place in the Senior. So here our chat.

Hi Malachi, here we are. It’s going to be a very full season for you (Stock600 championship and road racing) so how are you?
I am doing well so far and really enjoying it! It has been quite busy so far and with two rounds of BSB coming up and the Manx GP it’s going to be another busy few weeks to come but I am really looking forward to it!

Before to talk about the Manx, I’m curious about your 2013, when you ride in the S2 Supermoto championship. how this experience helped you to grow up as rider?
It was really great to ride in such a competitive championship as I started the season further back and gradually progressed up the field throughout the year. It teaches you excellent race craft and was also very good for fitness especially with the off-road sections.

Thanks. Why did you do this switch from S2 to Stock600?
The team boss wanted to switch sports and concentrate more on the road racing side. And for me as a newcomer to the 600 the bsb stock 600 seemed like a very good testing ground!

You are doing a great debut now, point at Snetterton and during the last round at Brands Hatch. Again you are growing up quickly I guess you are enjoying it
Yes really enjoying it! Had a lot of bad luck this year in the races as it is a learning year for the team as much as it is me as a rider. I am proud with these two results and am hoping for more like this and aiming for top 10 by the end of the year

Are you ready for Thruxton and Oulton Park on the next two weeks?
Yes I feel ready. Thruxton is a new track for me but is supposed to be very fast so it sounds good! Oulton is my home track so I am looking forward to returning there hopefully with better luck than last time! (note: Malache had a 7^th final place, he was 13^th on grid at Thruxton and at Oulton Park in grid was third and in race he did a 4^th final place)

You talked also about the road racing plans for this season and few weeks ago you did a great debut on the Billown Circuit, how you “lived” this road race? it was you first (or am I wrong?)
Yes that was my first ever road race and I loved it! Was certainly a new experience for me but I really enjoyed it. It made me look forward to the Manx GP around the mountain circuit even more!

In the Manx Gas Solo Championship Race you have been the first rider on a 600cc! And you did a podium too! Not bad for a first experience
No was a very good experience and I really enjoyed it!

Now the great race is coming, few weeks before the Manx GP, first question about it. How a young rider decide to ride it?
Haha not too sure to be honest, I got asked if I wanted to do it by the team and after some thinking I said yes. I think it helped doing the southern 100 before i go to the Manx GP because now I have an understanding of what to expect

How are you trained for the Mountain Course?
I have driven a few laps around the circuit in a car and watch a lot of onboard laps. I was also on the Manx newcomer weekend which was a great help to me!

Oh very well! what races will you ride?
I am entered Into the Manx newcomer race and then senior race

You will ride the 600cc you ride at the Southern, right?
Yes the same one as bsb also

How your style must change for road racing, thinking about short circuit? (It’s a great thing you know very well your bike)
Yes it changes a lot and I am still learning at both sports so I always aim to improve my style

It seems to be not so bad, you can always learn without forcing your style thinking about the Southern what’s your best memory of it?
Ehm I would say being on the podium next to Conor Cummins was probably a very proud moment of mine

I know. what do you wish for the Manx?
I am hoping to podium or win the newcomer and just see how best I can do in the senior!

And I really wish you to win!
I hope so too!

If someone will tell you to make a choice BSB or road racing. you think you could do a choice (and if yes, what it is) or not?
At this moment in time I am enjoying doing both. If there was a choice I would like to stay BSB but rides are harder to come by and there are a lot more opportunities on the road racing scene, especially for a young rider

It the last times many rider are doing both, road racing are coming back to be popular and I think it’s a great thinking for riders too, also thinking about sponsorship
Yes a lot of sponsors seen to be very interested in the road racing side of things and I am always looking out for new personal sponsors!

As you said you are young, did your family supported your wish to ride since the first day? how the lived the road racing career?
From a very young ages as 6 my dad and grandad have always funded my racing in motocross. They also funded me through my first years of supermoto on the crf150 when I was around 13 all the way up until I signed for my first team at around 14.. They are the people who got me to where I am today

That’s great!!  you are really close and it’s a good thing!
Yes like every father son though we have our arguments haha!

Exactly!

Ok, the interview is almost over, what do you do in your free time? how you like to relax?
On a weekend off I like to do some running and training.. I really like to ride motocross but finding the time to is very difficult. I like to relax by just lying on my sofa and watching TV or hanging out with friends

Except for the Mountain Course, tell me a top three circuit you like (even if you’d like to ride it)
I have always liked the look of Philip island in Australia! Also Laguna Seca and I would like to compete at Macau!

Who knows, is a few years Macau could call for your entry
I hope so!
