BSB: INTERVISTA A JOSH BROOKES “VOGLIO VINCERE IL BSB E …”

L’AUSTRALIANO PRONTO ALL’ASSALTO AL TITOLO BSB ED A TORNARE ALLA NORTH WEST200 SPERANDO DI PARTECIPARE AL TT.
Classe 1983, Josh Brookes nelle ultime stagioni è stato il portacolori del team Tyco Suzuki, quest’anno si appresta a prendere il via alla sua sesta stagione nel campionato inglese, sarà anche un “debutto” per lui poiché esordirà con i colori del team Milwaukee Yamaha di Shaun Muir. Josh è un ragazzo molto gentile e simpatico, ecco la nostra chiacchierata su BSB, Road Races ed ambizioni future.
Ciao Josh, prima di tutto come stai, come sta andando l’allenamento per la prossima stagione?
Ciao Lilla, sto molto bene. Qui in Australia è estate così il tempo è bello e mi sto divertendo molto. Ho uno stile di allenamento particolare, la maggior parte delle giornate le trascorro allenandomi con il motocross o con la moto ad acqua. Devo divertirmi quando mi alleno o non do il massimo. Sia il motocross che la moto ad acqua sono molto difficili dal punto di vista fisico..in qualche modo i muscoli lavorano come quando sono in gara. Un altro tipo di allenamento è il ciclismo sia su strada che con la mountain bike, alcune volte faccio delle piccole nuotate o vado con il kayak.
La stagione che sta per iniziare sarà la sesta nel BSB, ma credi sarà anche una sorta di debutto, nuovo team e nuova moto..?
Si, il 2014 sarà la mia sesta stagione nel BSB. È molto di più di quanto mi aspettassi…voglio sempre crescere ed avvicinarmi al WSBK e alla MotoGP perché è il mio sogno fin da quando ero bambino. È un momento difficile per il mondo delle corse, ogni team e persone hanno difficoltà a trovare sponsor e soldi per correre. Così questa stagione sono costretto a rimanere nel BSB.. Quest’anno sarà diverso dalle altre stagioni perché sarà la prima volta su una Yamaha per me, sono contemporaneamente emozionato e nervoso di vedere cosa porterà questa combinazione.
Sarà la prima volta sulla tua Yamaha R1, quando la proverai per la prima volta?
Il primo di marzo ho il volo per Heathrow e la prima volta sulla mia R1 sarà a Cartagena, in Spagna, il 6-7-8 marzo. Non so cosa aspettarmi perché ho un nuovo team ed una nuova moto da conoscere ed imparare. Ho un buon presentimento che le cose andranno bene ma dobbiamo solo aspettare quel giorno e vedere cosa accadrà realmente.
Il 2013 è stato il tuo debutto nel modo del road racing con dei grandi risultati alla North West200 (nella sola gara che hai potuto fare a causa del tempo) e sopratutto al TT, che ricordi hai?
Il mio weekend alla NW200 è stato una grande delusione, ho guidato molto in condizioni di bagnato ed ho dovuto imparare il tracciato la prima volta in circostanze difficili, così quando le gare sono state cancellate penso che chiunque si sia chiesto “cosa sarebbe successo”. Il TT è la cosa più incredibile che io abbia mai fatto. È in cima alla lista per: Folle, Spaventoso, Gratificante e Libertà. È stato un alternarsi di così tante emozioni, non penso che nella vita esista un’altra possibilità che possa sfidare questa esperienza..Ed io voglio farlo ancora.
Avevi dichiarato che la tua partecipazione al TT era il tuo modo di “ribellarti”, ti senti così o adesso il divertimento di guidare al TT è molto di più?
Mi sento allo stesso modo nei confronti del TT come prima.. Prima volevo provare e farne esperienza, ora lo voglio ancor di più e ancora e ancora credo sia come una droga.
Nel mondo delle corse il rischio è parte del gioco, la tua famiglia ti ha supportato dal primo giorno, come vivono i weekend di gare?
Sono una persona egoista, non mi interessa molto cosa pensino le altre persone. La mia famiglia mi conosce e sa che carattere io abbia, così non sfidano le mie idee o cercano di crear ostacoli. Mi guardano e sperano che vada tutto bene.
Purtroppo sembra che tu e Hutchison non prenderete parte alla prossima edizione del TT a causa del cambio di regolamento, come stai vivendo questi giorni?
Il TT 2014 non è chiaro, le regole cambiano ed ogni team ne è rimasto toccato in modi diversi. Al momento sembra che la mia squadra non parteciperà quest’anno =( ma c’è una piccola piccola luce alla fine di questo tunnel e potrebbe esserci la possibilità che ci sia una modifica ed io possa correre ancora. Sono molto frustrato da questo tipo di cose ma nella vita e nelle corse ci sono così tante cose che ti buttano giù che preferisco rimaner concentrato sulle cose positive.
Se il regolamento non cambierà correrai solo alla North West200, o magari cercherai un altro road racing meeting (magari la Southern100 o l’Ulster GP)?
Se non cambia nulla la NW200 sarà al sola road race che farò. Resterò fedele alle decisioni del mio team.
Che desideri ha per questo 2014?
Nel 2014 lavorerò per vincere il British Superbike così potrò spostarmi verso il mondiale SBK ed obbiettivi più grandi. Chiederò anche per alcune wild card nel WSBK..forse Imola, Donington e Misano. Non vedo l’ora anche per L’Enorme sfida che è la 8 ore di Suzuka. Lo scorso anno ho finito in seconda posizione così questo obiettivo non sarà archiviato finchè non sarò sul gradino più alto.
Ultima domanda, quali sono I tuoi tre circuiti preferiti e perchè?
I miei circuiti preferiti:
(Il tracciato dell’Isola di Man è il migliore)
1. Suzuka, in Giappone. Ha queste curve incredibili che sono una grande sfida ma quando le padroneggi hai una gran feeling.
2. Phillip Island, Australia. Un buon tracciato mi sento a casa.
3. Thruxton, Inghilterra. 5 marce a gas spalancato con la Superbike….hai l’aria sul collo quando ti alzi ad ogni giro.

THE AUSSIE READY FOR THE BSB START, TO COME BACK TO RIDE THE NORTH WEST200 WISHING THE 2014 TT.
Josh Brookes was born in 1983, during last seasons he rode for the Tyco Suzuki team, this year is going to take part to his 6th season in BSB but it will be also a debut because he’s going to begin with Shaun Muir’s team Milwaukee Yamaha. Josh is a really nice and funny guy, here our chat about BSB, Road Races and future ambitions.
Hi Josh, first of all, how are you? how’s going your training for the next season?
Hi Lilla, I am very well, It is summer here in Australia so the weather is kind and I enjoy it a lot. I have a rare training style, Most of my days are Motocross riding or Stand-up jet skiing. I have to enjoy my training or I don’t push my self hard. Both motocross and jet skiing are physically difficult… and in some ways work the muscles the same as when I’m racing. Other training I do is road cycling and mountain bike riding, with a little swimming or kayaking some times.
The season is going to start will be the sixth in BSB, but do you think it will be also a kind of debut, new team and new bike..?
Yes 2014 is my 6th season in BSB. It is much longer here then I expected… I will always want to be moving forward and get closer to WSBK and MotoGP because this is my dream from when I was a little child. This is a difficult period for racing, every team and person is finding it difficult to find sponsors and the money to race. So for this reason I am forced to stay in BSB… This year is different from all other seasons because it will be the first time for me with Yamaha, even I am excited and nervous to see what to combination will bring.
It will be the first time on your R1 Yamaha, when will you tests it?
I fly to Heathrow on the 1st of March and my first ride on the R1 will be at (Cartegena Spain) 6th 7th and 8th. I don’t know what to expect because I have a new team and a new bike to meet and learn… I have a good premonition that things will go well but we all have to wait for that day to see for real.
The 2013 has been your debut on road racing world with great results at the NW200 (in the only one race you did because of the weather) and most of all at the TT, which memories you have?
My NW200 weekend was a big disappointment, I rode a lot in wet conditions and had to learn the roads for the first time in the most difficult circumstances. so when the races were cancelled I think everyone was left to ‘wonder’ what could have been. TT was the most amazing thing I have done….. It is at the top of the list for: Crazy, Scary, Beautiful, Rewarding, Sensation and Freedom. It has some many changes of emotion, I don’t think life has another possibility that can challenge this experience… And I want to do it again.
You told that your entry at the TT was your way to “rebel” , are you still feeling like that or the fun to ride there is much more now?
I still feel the same way about the TT as before… First I want to try it and feel it and have that experience, Now I want it more and again and again like a drug I suppose.
In road racing the risk is part of the game, did your family support you since the first day, how they live all race weekends?
I am a selfish person, I don’t care enough about what other people think. My family know me and my character so they don’t challenge my ideas or try and create a barrier. They just watch and hope I stay safe most of all.
Unfortunately it seems you and Hutchison will not take part this edition because of new rules, how are you living these days?
TT 2014 is not clear, Rules change and each team is affected in a different way. At the moment it seems that my team wont be at the race this year 🙁 but there is a little tiny light at the end of this tunnel so maybe there is a chance it will all be corrected and I can race again. I am very frustrated by this kind of thing but there a many let downs in life and in racing so I just keep focussed on the good things.
If rules will not change you will ride just at the North West200, or maybe you could look for another one road race meeting (maybe the Southern100 or the Ulster GP)?
If nothing changes the only road race I will do is NW200. I will stand loyal to the decision of my team.
So, which wishes do you have for this 2014?
2014 I will be working to win the British Superbike Championship so I could then move to WSBK and bigger goals. I also will be asking for wild card entry in World Superbike events… Maybe Imola, Donington and Misano. Also I look forward the the Huge challenge that is Suzuka 8Hour. Last year I finished second so this goal is not achieved until I am on the top step.
Last question which are your three favorite tracks, and why?
My Favourite tracks
(Isle of Man TT circuit is the best)
1. Suzuka, Japan. It has some amazing turns that are a big challenge but a great feeling when you master it.
2. Phillip Island, Australia. Good track but it feels like home.
3. Thruxton, England. 5 gear turn full throttle on Superbike…. Its makes the hair on your neck stand up every lap.
